The awards season is once again upon us, and today is the first major awards show of the year with the 75th Golden Globe Awards airing tonight. The Globes aren’t always a great indicator of what films will eventually win the Oscar, but they’re still fun to watch and predict, especially this year. Unlike last year, where “La La Land” and “Moonlight” dominated almost all the awards, there’s no clear frontrunner for any of the major categories, especially Best Picture. The Globes’ division of “drama” films and “comedies and musicals” often makes it even hard to get a clear idea of what the Oscars could look like, but maybe the tides will start to shift in the direction of a particular film after tonight.
My predictions for tonight’s Golden Globe winners in the film categories is below. With the exception of a few films that will not open in my area until next weekend (“The Post,” “I, Tonya,” and “Phantom Thread”), I have seen all the nominees. Best Motion Picture Drama- “The Shape of Water”
Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy- “Lady Bird”
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama- Sally Hawkins, “The Shape of Water”
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama- Gary Oldman, “Darkest Hour”
*This one’s actually a pretty tough category at the moment. Oldman seemed like an early frontrunner, and very well could still win for his phenomenal portrayal of Winston Churchill, but don’t count out newcomer Timothee Chalamet, or old favorite Daniel Day-Lewis in what may be his last film performance.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy- Saoirse Ronan, “Lady Bird”
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy- James Franco, “The Disaster Artist”
*I loved Franco’s performance, but wouldn’t it be great if Daniel Kaluuya, the breakout star of “Get Out,” won instead?
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture- Laurie Metcalf, “Lady Bird”
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture- Willem DaFoe, “The Florida Project”
*I feel like “The Florida Project” sadly lost a lot of steam very quickly this awards season. Armie Hammer for “Call Me By Your Name” seems like the next most viable choice.
Best Director, Motion Picture- Guillermo del Toro, “The Shape of Water”
Best Screenplay, Motion Picture- Greta Gerwig, “Lady Bird”
*Going to say that Greta will get this over Guillermo since she was cheated out of a directing nom.
Best Motion Picture, Animated- “Coco”
Best Motion Picture, Foreign Language- “The Square”
Best Original Score, Motion Picture- Hans Zimmer, “Dunkirk”
*Back-up pick is Alexandre Desplat’s score for “The Shape of Water”
Best Original Song, Motion Picture- “This Is Me,” “The Greatest Showman”
*Pulling for “Coco” though.
